The EBU Cultural Forum 2022

Jonathan Broughton, Head of Strategy at the EBU

EBU Cultural Forum at PRIX EUROPA Friday, 28 October 2022, 10:00-13:00

From boardrooms to newsrooms, we all share the same challenges – at a time when Public Service Media (PSM) companies are competing with tech giants and struggling with shrinking budgets, we also need to serve both the traditional radio audiences and new groups of listeners searching for vibrant and relevant podcasts. Podcast versus broadcast - how to serve audiences with different demands and ideals? How to optimise formats on different platforms and in radio channels?

10:10   KEYNOTE : Challenges Ahead of PSM radio

Jonathan Broughton, Head of Strategy, EBU

Looking at the big picture of the challenges and opportunities ahead of PSM in the coming years. What are the trends or most probable developments in the area of online distribution, of changes in the audience demographics and in the content itself? Are the PSM media reflecting these challenges well in their current plans and programme production and scheduling?

10:40   The Big Distribution Questions

Mattias Hermansson, Swedish Radio

The fast development in media changes the basical structures for how information, distribution and audience relationships are built. The questions for PSM companies also becomes existential in a reality where listeners chooses digital formats: Are PSM companies content providers or platforms - and what role are we supposed to play in peoples lives? And depending on what your answers are, how does it affect the content and the way different formats we are distributed?

11:15   PANEL DISCUSSION : Broadcast or podcast ?

Through a series of case studies from different perspectives – from the station manager to content producers – the panel will be looking at various aspects of spoken word audio content both on linear (and live) radio broadcast as well as moving these formats online while also creating original podcast productions aimed at those who are not listening to linear broadcast anymore. Are the traditional radio genres competitive with the online content produced by  commercial players? Is podcast a standalone format or a just a modern word to promote the already popular genres such as radio drama or documentary series? What do the PSM radio teams need to do to use the skills of their professional employees but at the same time also attract new independent producers to embrace the full advantage of the growing popularity of on-demand content especially among younger generations? The panel will present their perspectives and the audience are also welcome to join the interactive discussion.
