The decline of the linear media usage has been ongoing for the past decade. People use media when they want, wherever they want it.
After years of trying to reach our audiences on third-party platforms like social media, a lot of public broadcasters all over Europe are returning to focusing their own platforms. But with that we enter the massive competition of the international streaming market with heavyweight giants like Netflix, Amazon and Disney.
At SRF we identified the key factors of making content streamable and condensed them to a catalogue of 17 criteria to launch into our streaming future. The criteria cover distribution inputs like facilitating binge watching all the way to new forms of storytelling required in an on-demand setting.
Together we will look at how public broadcasters of different European countries position their streaming platforms, and we peek into the crystal ball: how will the international streaming market develop in the near future? Are our own streaming platforms the future of public broadcasting?

Radio Current Affairs’s Coordinators Brit Jensen and Liam O’Brien on this year’s competition:
‘After an intense two days of listening and discussion, the PRIX EUROPA Radio Current Affairs jury concluded its work on Tuesday evening just before 20:00. We heard a wide range of stories through 16 investigative and current affairs audio programmes from all over Europe. Stories included serial killers, medical malpractice, financial fraud, murder and state/government failures amongst others. The standard of production, across the board, has been very impressive this year - as well as the impact and response each production generated in its own respective country. Real, meaningful change. With a standard like this year, it's impossible to choose a winner - so all eyes, and ears, on Friday evenings Award Ceremony!’

…has come to a successful end!
15 lucky students had been chosen by a selection committee to participate in the Masterclass and had the unique opportunity to learn from the best radio documentary makers in Europe, to glean their secrets and get their advice.
Tim Desmond, Chair of the Åke Blomstrom committee summarising the two successful days at PRIX EUROPA 2022:
‘The 2022 Åke Blomström Masterclass @PRIX EUROPA took place over the weekend at Potsdam. 15 young feature makers from 11 different countries in Europe spent two intensive days training with four PRIX EUROPA winning masters of their craft. Agnieszka Czyżewska Jacquemet (Polski Radio Lublin), Daria Corrias (RAI), Christian Lerch (SWR) and Daniel Valesco (SR) took the young feature makers through the process of creating and realising their award winning features. The students pitched programme ideas over the weekend for feedback from the masters and lively discussions took place about all aspects of feature making. The Masterclass was declared a great success!‘
Political PRIX EUROPA kicks off in Potsdam today
Under the slogan "Media that matter" this 36th edition of the European media festival boasts a host of political themes across all media and genres: from television fiction series like "The Year of Fortuyn", digital media projects like "Automated Election Reports" or the podcast series "War On The Internet" to classic investigations like "Planet Killers", "The Russian Hitmen" or the radio documentary "Utøya Revisited". All in all, 187 productions from about 30 countries are nominated.
“What makes PRIX EUROPA different from other festivals" says Dr. Katja Wildermuth, Director General of the BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk) and PRIX EUROPA-President, “is that adjudication is not in the hands of traditional juries but in the hands of the media-makers themselves." Over 500 professionals from all over Europe will be taking part in this process, enabling a week-long exchange that has become increasingly important, Wildermuth continues: "PRIX EUROPA has taken up the cause of fighting for the fellowship of Europe by displaying all of its cultural diversity. Particularly in times of uncertainty and crisis, independent high quality media are more important than ever to foster informed debate and to keep societies together."
The Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday, 28 October 2022, in the Schinkelhalle in Potsdam. The Jury groups will confer 14 awards to the Best European TV-, Radio- and Digital Media Programmes of the Year, culminating in the announcement of this year's European Journalist of the Year, which honours a journalistic game-changer who has shown extraordinary creativity, courage and impact on their society or audience.
