The new PRIX EUROPA President Jean-Paul Philippot

The PRIX EUROPA Steering Committee has elected its new President on Saturday, 28 October 2023: Jean-Paul Philippot, Director General of Radio-Télévision Belge de la communauté Française – rtbf, reacted to his appointment by the Committee members representing 20 European public broadcasters with the words:

“I am deeply honoured to take on the presidency of this festival, which showcases the best of European audio, video and digital media programming. 
I firmly believe that European public service media constitute an unrivalled showcase for creativity and diversity in all its forms and formats, and act as a strong advocate of investigative journalism.
The changing landscape of our industry should encourage us to maintain these standards and instil a sense of pride.”

The second day of the competition has started...

Today the PRIX EUROPA 2023 Digital Media Projects category will kicked-off with the Workshop ‘How to be ready to compete with the streaming giants?’ starting at 10:00. And today the jury members of the TV Investigation and the TV IRIS category will begin to select among the nominated programmes the Best European TV/Video Investigation and TV/Video IRIS programme of the year 2023.
During the breaks all delegates have the opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from all over Europe over coffee and snacks @ Café Europa.

Without independent reporting, there are no informed citizens; without informed citizens, there is no democracy.

The PRIX EUROPA brings together representatives of our continent's public service media, whose excellence spans all genres. They gather in a historic place. Here, at Haus des Rundfunks in Berlin, the Nazis used radio to spread darkness with their propaganda.

As BBC’s first specialist correspondent for Disinformation & Social Media, 27 year old Marianna Spring has already built herself an award-winning reputation with podcasts like ‘Marianna in Conspiracyland’ and ‘Disaster Trolls’, exploring and challenging trolls and conspiracy theories and dealing with hatred and abuse. At PRIX EUROPA Brunch, Marianna will share her experiences and offer tips from working at this new frontline for journalism.

What’s the best way to handle trolls when you are a PSM storyteller? Is it possible to be impartial and balanced when you are covering people and organisations that are spreading disinformation, conspiracy theories and ‘alternative facts’? Hear Roger Mahony, Editor, Editorial Standards BBC Radio 4 together with Stephanie Pieper, Head of Programmes rbb24 Inforadio discuss and answer questions from the audience. Mattias Hermansson, project manager from Swedish Radio and co-author of the company’s editorial guidelines moderates the discussion.

Will AI replace creatives? Not if we learn how to open the toolbox. Lars Bastholm, an internationally renowned AI expert, will present the newest and most relevant AI tools for media producers.  

12:00  PS media uses AI to form new types of content: Cases 
Geert-Jan Strengholt from the Netherlands will talk about VPRO Backlight’s Archive of the Future, the AI Song Contest, current Dutch projects at other public broadcasters (with support of NPO Innovation) and present preliminary results from a research project entitled Synthetic Truth.

Kåre V. Poulsen and Lars Bastholm will guide you through the Danish project ChatNFS – Grund:Bot. DR is currently developing a new experiment: What if the Danes could have a conversation with one of the most important, famous and influential people, who died long ago. We will be talking about what to consider, when you want to recreate a person with AI. What is the process and what are the tools? What are the benefits, the ethical and rights aspects and what perspectives open up, when you can suddenly have a conversation with the dead.

How to be ready to compete with the streaming giants?

The decline of the linear media usage has been ongoing for the past decade. People use media when they want, wherever they want it. 
After years of trying to reach our audiences on third-party platforms like social media, a lot of public broadcasters all over Europe are returning to focusing their own platforms. But with that we enter the massive competition of the international streaming market with heavyweight giants like Netflix, Amazon and Disney.
At SRF we identified the key factors of making content streamable and condensed them to a catalogue of 17 criteria to launch into our streaming future. The criteria cover distribution inputs like facilitating binge watching all the way to new forms of storytelling required in an on-demand setting. 
Together we will look at how public broadcasters of different European countries position their streaming platforms, and we peek into the crystal ball: how will the international streaming market develop in the near future? Are our own streaming platforms the future of public broadcasting?

The Åke Blomström Masterclass @ PRIX EUROPA 2023 is a two day training event for Europe’s audio talent by Europe’s best radio documentary makers.

The Masterclass will be delivered at the start of this year’s PRIX EUROPA (21 & 22 October 2023) in Berlin. During the two day Masterclass the invited participants will have the unique opportunity to learn from the best radio documentary makers in Europe, to glean their secrets and get their advice.

This year’s Åke Blomström Masterclass received a record number of 64 applications from more than 20 countries. An international selection committee reviewed all entries and made its choice.

After a thorough preselection process, 181 outstanding productions from 27 countries have been chosen to compete in October for the prestigious 16 PRIX EUROPA 2023 Awards.
The submitters of these nominations will appoint Jury Members for the competition in Berlin.

A unique system of open juries is at the core of PRIX EUROPA:
Each Jury Group reviews all the entries of the respective category together, discusses them in public and then assesses them using a points system. All media professionals are invited to register as Jury Group Members.

If your agenda does not allow for a stay from beginning to end, register as Observer which will enable you to attend presentations and discussions you are interested in – just without voting rights. We ask Observers to choose a maximum of two categories.

Personal Registration to PRIX EUROPA is free of charge.

This year PRIX EUROPA returns to Berlin. We will open doors at
Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg - rbb, Haus des Rundfunks (Masurenallee 8-14, 14057 Berlin) on Sunday, 22 October 2023 at 14:00.

For the Awards Ceremony all Jury Group Members will be invited to Berlin’s town hall Rotes Rathaus (Rathausstraße 15, 10178 Berlin) on Friday evening, 27 October 2023.

 Nominate your Journalist of the Year 2023

PRIX EUROPA wants to honour a European journalist who has gone outside her/his comfort zone and shown extraordinary creativity, courage and impact on her/his specific society or audience. We are looking for a journalistic game-changer dedicated to the truth in the thicket of global disinformation.

A person immune to political propaganda and populism aiming to provide transparency, ready to go out and get to the bottom of things, find out the truth and inform the world. Somebody whose work has helped break through encrusted positions and change perspectives.

Does anyone come to mind? Proposals from all genres and formats of journalism are very welcome.
